- Opis: Crystallography is well-known to have deep connections to many
mathematical disciplines: geometry (elementary as well as theory of
tilings and packings), group and representation theory, linear
algebra, numerical mathematics and harmonic analysis, … Still,
the mathematical foundations of crystallography are a mixture of
geometry, linear algebra and group theory. In this talk we shall
present the fundamental ideas and results from these. For a
mathematician the level is pregraduate, but with a twist in the
standard presentation in order to emphasize the concrete implications
(and inspirations) in „true” crystallography. In particular, the
mathematical view of crystal systems, crystal classes and space groups
shall be introduced in a way suitable for audience with standard
mathematical graduate knowledge, but without pre-knowledge in
crystallography.
